Project Overview

This project applied fluorescence-based fiber optic temperature sensing to selected winding locations of a dry-type transformer.

Multiple fiber optic temperature probes were positioned at defined winding points to provide direct temperature measurement inside the transformer structure.

The optical sensing arrangement allows individual winding locations to be monitored through separate temperature measurement points.

Winding Temperature Monitoring Requirement

Dry-type transformer winding temperature can vary between different positions because of winding structure, current distribution, ventilation and local thermal conditions.

The project required direct temperature measurement at selected winding locations rather than relying only on external surface temperature or indirect temperature indication.

Fiber optic probes were therefore arranged at defined internal winding positions to provide point temperature data from the selected measurement locations.

Winding Measurement Point Arrangement

Fiber optic temperature probes were positioned according to the transformer winding structure and the required temperature monitoring locations.

Each probe corresponds to a defined measurement point, allowing temperature differences between selected winding positions to be monitored independently.

The measurement point arrangement can be adapted according to transformer construction, winding layout and the number of locations requiring direct temperature measurement.

Fiber Optic Probe Installation & Routing

The fiber optic probes were fixed at selected winding locations while maintaining the transformer winding structure and required insulation clearances.

Optical fibers were routed from the measurement points toward the external connection area with consideration for bending, mechanical protection and the available routing path.

The non-conductive optical sensing path allows temperature signals to be transmitted from the winding measurement points without electrical sensor wiring at the sensing locations.

Multi-Point Temperature Acquisition

Signals from the installed fiber optic probes are connected to a multi-channel temperature monitoring instrument outside the transformer sensing area.

Each measurement point is assigned to an individual optical channel so that winding temperatures can be viewed and compared separately.

The monitoring instrument provides centralized acquisition of temperature data from the selected transformer winding locations.

Project Result

The completed arrangement provides direct multi-point temperature measurement at selected locations within the dry-type transformer windings.

Fiber optic probes, optical routing and external temperature acquisition equipment form a complete sensing path from the winding measurement points to the monitoring interface.

The configuration provides a practical reference for dry-type transformers requiring direct winding temperature measurement with electrically isolated point sensors.
